Day 15 - DC Arlington

Sunday, July 6, 2014

We went to the Capital Ward for church this morning right across the street from our hotel. Lex really wanted to meet new friends.  She did meet a girl named, Laurel, that had just moved there from Hawaii and told funny stories and living on the island. Many of the members of the ward are stationed at the nearby Andrews Air Force Base.

That afternoon we visited Arlington Cemetery.  We found the grave site of Harold's step dad, Les Bartek.

We also saw John F. Kennedy's grave site and the Eternal Flame.  We tried to read the quotes by Kennedy that were nearby but many were too difficult to read.  We went up to the Arlington House that was once owned by Robert E. Lee.  From the front of the house there is an amazing view of DC.

There are over 400,000 people buried there.  It was humbling to see the final resting place of so many who sacrificed so much for our country.

One of the more interesting things we saw were these Civil War era gravestones that had been overgrown and entwined in the roots of this tree.

We arrived at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier just it time to witness the changing of the guard.  The precision and meticulous manner of the soldiers showed the respect and honor these fallen soldiers deserve.

As we drove around today, we read trivia questions from this Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader game I had found in the Fong library.  It reminded me of playing Jr. Trivia on road trips with my siblings when I was a kid.  It was pretty fun but some of the questions were difficult for even Dave and I.

We went to the DC Temple and spent some time at the Visitor's Center.  We watched videos about 8 different people and how they decided to go on a mission, experiences from their time in the field, and what they are up to since returning home.  The stories were interesting and we were enjoying the cool air and soft couch,

We finally got ourselves up off the couch and walked around the temple.  It was huge!

When we got back to the hotel, we stuck with trying not to eat out on Sunday, and had a frozen dinner of Chicken Alfredo I had bought the day before.  We celebrated my 38th birthday with Hostess cupcakes and Dave gave me a shirt he had gotten at the Library of Congress.
