Day 13 - DC Independence Day

Friday, July 4, 2014

We got tickets to Ford's Theater to learn more about the Lincoln assignation.  They have restored the theater area to look just as it did then. We had gotten the audio tour, so we looked cool with our little audio players.

Seth's favorite President is Abraham Lincoln, so he was very intent on listening to each audio clip on the tour. This is visually proof of Seth's love for Lincoln.  He dressed up as him on a school dress up day in Kindergarten.

After the theater tour we went across the street, to the Peterson House, to where Lincoln actually died and got more information on the funerals and the manhunt for the killer. One of the coolest things in the Peterson House was this stack of books about Lincoln.  It was 3 stories tall.

On the corner of the street Ford's Theater is on, there is a Hard Rock Cafe.  We decided to eat there.  Our waiter was named Mama and he was from West Africa.

Dave and took a pic with this stained glass window of the King.

After lunch we took the Metro to The Holocaust Memorial Museum.  It was a bit overwhelming to see the magnitude of this tragedy and I hope the kids got something from the experience.

We had a few hours to kill before the fireworks, so we went to the Museum of American History. We just saw the giant flag that inspired the Star-Spangled Banner to be written bu Francis Scott Key.

Then then kids were done in there and wanted to go to the Natural History Museum.

Lex wanted to see the elephant exhibits. We saw a lot of animals, mummies, and the Hope Diamond.

Most of the dinosaur bones were not on display, but Seth was still happy to see this triceratops, and to pet this little guy using a green screen.

We stood in a long line to fill up our bottles with filtered water, went to stake out a fireworks watching spot on the grass, then stood in a long line to get food.

Lex, Seth, and I stood in a huge line to use the porta-potties and had to run back to our spot just as the fireworks began.

Les still hates the sound of fireworks!

The display went on for about 25 minutes.

About 700, 000 people go to the mall to watch the fireworks.  It was crazy there.

It looked like it could take hours to wait for the metro, so we walked a mile to a stop further out.  We were so tired but it was definitely a once in a lifetime experience to celebrate the 4th in our nation's capital.
