May Happenings

Monday, May 1, 2017

Seth won the contest for the cover of the yearbook and won a free copy. He participated in so many activities this year, he is in it a lot.

Sunday, May 14, 2017

For Mother's Day, Seth kept the tradition of having a salad bar alive. The girls sort of helped. The kids each gave me a ring for me to wear to represent themselves.

Thursday, May 18, 2017

Lex got a job Lifegaurding at Tahiti Village. She made a bunch of jokes about being Wendy Peffercorn from The Sandlot. She did meet a little boy (Dagonet) who crushed on her and she actually visited in Utah this summer.

Seth tried out for Hummel's Got Talent and made it. He played The Blues at Frog Bottom on the drums.

Memorial Day Camping

Saturday, May 27, 2017

We got up Saturday, and heading to Big Bear, CA for a weekend of camping. I realized a little too late that we had forgotten to bring the Carne Asada that we had promised to share with the other families. We found a Mexican Market and bought some more and ate lunch at a little diner.

We had committed a little late to come on the trip so we shared a site with the Goons (not the Shafers - Jay snores!). Saturday we just set up and played games and had treats around the campfire.

Sunday, May 28, 2017

On Sunday, we walked around the Visitor's Center.

Then we hiked down to the lake.

After more cards games and naps that afternoon, we all shared our contributions to the Carne Asada dinner - we had rice, corn, guacamole, chips and salsa. It was yummy!

Monday, May 29, 2017

After trying omelets in a bag (putting eggs and cheese, bacon, and veggies in boiling water to cook), we packed up and headed home. I've always wanted to try The Mad Greek, so we stopped on the way home. We had Gyros and Strawberry Milkshakes. It was just Ok, but now I can stop wondering about it. It was a fun trip and has turned into a yearly tradition I look forward to.

Cam's 14th Birthday

Thursday, May 18, 2017

On Cam's actual 14th birthday, we had her favorite dinner, crockpot chicken, and she got a few gifts - a bluetooth speaker and a ukelele.

She wanted to have a Dare Night for her party.

The kids divided into 2 teams. Dave and I each took a team and set off to complete and film as many dares as possible. Here is what they had to do:

Dare Night - Be back to the Hill’s by 8:15
Video tape each activity completed on 1 phone

_____  One teammate does a dance in front of a stranger, then asks the stranger to score him/her on a scale from 1 to 10. (points are based on the score they give you)

_____  Use the kazoos busk for two dollars. (5 points)

_____  Record a team member cleaning a public toilet. (7 points)

_____  Eat a donut out of the Krispy Kreme trash.(10 points)

_____  Do a chinese fire drill at a stop light. (7 points)

_____  Have a team member wear a trash bag into a store. (5 points)

_____  Have a shopping cart race in a parking lot. ( 5 points)

_____  Buy a kids meal at a drive thru and have someone on your team run by and steal it as they hand it to you. (10 points)

_____  Have one team member eat a whole kids meal in less than 1 minutes. ( 8 points)

_____  Get a stranger to kiss you on the cheek. (5 points)

_____  Have 2 boys ask a store employee how to use tampons. (7 points

_____  Eat a raw egg (8 points)

When we got back to the house, we watched all the videos . Everyone's favorites were the ones of people stealing the drive thru food.

They sent the rest of the night just kinda hanging out and being a bit weird.

When the teenagers finally left, a few of Lex's new Single Adult Ward friends (pest control salesmen) came over. They had gone to Dunkin Donuts and waited for the workers to throw out the extra donuts. They grabbed the bag from the trash and brought it over. It was kinda gross and funny at the same time.

Bristlecone Storytelling Festival

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

I ran the Storytelling Club at school again this year and had a fun time with the weekly meetings. We learned how to prepare a story and played lots of acting games. We were able to have 4 winning stories go to the District Festival. Thomas N. told "Let's Do Nothing", Megan P. told "Interrupting Chicken", and Anton B., Adreamma H, and Jessica J. told "Carnivores" together. They all did a great job.

Wednesday, May 17, 2017

Seth actually got the highest score at our school for his story "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs". The night of the festival, his baseball team had a game for the end of the season tournament. I asked Mr. Duck if Seth could come to the festival for his region and he allowed it.

Seth's little cousins, Jude, Wally, Scout, and Sarah even came to watch him. Wally actually fell through the theater chair and got stuck. Seth did a great job and Ms. Rita, who runs the whole festival said that lots have students have performed that story over the year, but she thought his version was the best!

Shark Reef

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

This year's Accelerated Reader theme was "Get Hooked on Books" and I had fish decor up in the library with lots of characters from Finding Nemo. The students got prizes for making their reading goals. They got bookmarks, goldfish crackers, water bottles, medals, and a field trip to the Shark Reef. Seth did not seem that interested in earning the field trip until his friend, Kristian, earned it.

We got all the kids situated on the bus and to the Mandalay Bay. My group went to the education room first. The host played games (bingo) and showed the students the animals in the room.

Then we got to walk through the animal displays.

Petting the rays is a favorite activity. Seth was scared and we had a hard time even getting him to try to touch the rays.

The finale is going to watch the sharks in their tanks. There were a few divers in the tank and they were pretty funny gesturing to the kids.

We headed back to school (after a little meltdown from Jayden K. after losing his bracelet). We had pizza delivered and the awesome parent volunteers helped get the kids all fed.

Kristian, Seth, Kevin, Emmonie, Byran

The field trip is always a great day. the kids who earn it tend to be the ones that I'm happy to spend the day with.

Music in the Parks

May 12-13, 2017

Cam participated in the Music in the Parks Festival again this year. The Madrigals left Friday morning to perform, then spent Saturday at Disneyland. This year everyone got along better and they were able to ride lots of rides. The Madrigals also went to an awards ceremony and got a great rating for their performance.
