Girls Camp - Seize the Day

Tuesday, June 27, 2017

I was the camp director again this year. Our theme was Seize the Day from the Newsies musical. we tired to get the girls to focus on not waiting to put their life in order or to the things they want to do. We met at the church to take off for Girls Camp. We have some snacks, divided into cars and took off.

We stopped in at the St. George Visitor's Center and watched some videos about Martin Harris and David Whitmer. They were both very good. One of the sister missionaries we spoke with was from China. Who knew we even had branches there?

We had lunch at the park and then headed to the Brigham Young Home. A cute older couple gave us the tour.

We were staying at the Close's cabin in Pine Valley. It worked out well, so their daughter, Aubrey, could go with us. When we got to the cabin, Amelia introduced the spiritual challenge. There were a few talks and scriptures to read and goals to set.

That night was skit night. Each group was given a fairy tale and a few random $1 Store objects to use.

On Wednesday morning, we went to Tuacahn to do a service project, which ensured us cheaper tickets to that night's show. My group had to clean the school's seminary building. Then we got a tour of the backstage. We saw people working on the costumes and the dressing rooms for the actors.

That afternoon we went to the Old Pine Valley Chapel. It's quite old and was built by a ship maker. It's pretty much built like an upside down ship. The attic had some really cool woodwork.

Amelia took us to her aunt's house, which was cool but creepy! Some parts were cute and modern and other parts looked old and cluttered.

We wanted the girl to spend time with people they may not usually hang out with, so we started making them draw a card that said what car they would go in that trip. It was fun to spend time with different mixes of girls. There were some pretty funny sing alongs. After dinner, we went to see Newsies at Tuacahn.

Me, Dave, and Cam had already seen it, but it was a different experience with the girls. There was a pretty cute actor, Spencer Ramirez, who wore a sleeveless shirt that had the girls whooping it up whenever he was onstage.

Thursday we were supposed to go on a hike near Hurricane, but someone mentioned going to Mountain Meadows. My ancestor was the leader of that disaster, I was pretty interested. We had all forgotten how terrible the Massacre was. It was also not much of a hike.

After our little walk around the meadow, we went to cool down at Gunlock Reservoir. It would have been more fun with a boat, but some of the girls were brave and waded in.

The priesthood organized a scavenger hunt, for the girls to find their parent letters. They had hidden it under the porch! They had a hard time finding it.

We gave the girls the rest of the afternoon to read their letters and finish their spiritual challenge. That night the Bishopbric made a delicious dinner - ribs, jello salad, and world famous Veyjo pies.

We spent our last night playing games, having Bishop Time, and testimony meeting.

The next morning, we got up and cleaned the cabin. We headed back to Vegas, with a quick pitstop for breakfast at McDonlad's. I got all the Hamilton lovers in my car on they way home and Savannah belted out every song.
