Battle of the Books

Friday, April 28, 2017

All year I have had a Battle of the Books Club. The kids are to read 8 books and take notes about them. We met all year and while I can't teach the kids about the books, I planned activities and treats that correlated to the books - like taking pictures with my nicer camera for a book about a girl entering a photo contest or making skeletal masks for a book about a Mexican artist.

At the end of March, I had a day where the 5 teams played Battles (Jeopardy-type games) against each other. Seth's team, The Bookinators, ended the day with the most points. On Thursday, they played the 2nd place team, The Reading Cheetahs, in front of all the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade classes. Seth's team sadly lost this time, so the Reading Cheetahs went on to play other schools.

One of the girls on the Reading Cheetahs dropped out, so Seth went as my alternate.  We played Reis ES in the first round and lost (370 to 260), then we played Tanaka ES in the second round and won (230 to 140)!

The kids did well and had fun.

We went to the MP room where we had pizza and waited until they tallied the scores. we ended up right in the middle, a vast improvement over the previous 2 years we have participated.
