June 16th-20th, 2014
Monday - This year was Ward Camp. Kim and I came up with the idea to have a Survivor theme when we found out that we were going to the beach. We met at the church and divided into cars for the drive. Dave & I had Lex, Shae, & Taylor in our truck.
When we got to South Carlsbad Beach we got set up. Each tent was a tribe and had a flag outside it's door. I helped the Priesthood with their flag. The campsite wasn't great - too close to a busy street and so many campsites around us, but we made due.
The YCL's
A member of the Temple Presidency spoke to us about the importance of temple work and especially doing family history work.
We had sack lunches near the temple and after a pit stop at Jamba Juice, we headed to Old Town. We had a few hours to wander around.
We sat and chatted under this big tree for a bit and checked out a few of the historic buildings. We were disappointed to find out that most were replicas.
The girls joked that even the donkeys behind the stable were fake robot donkeys. They had real ones, but the girls took pics on a fake.
We met back up with the rest of our group at the Mormon Battalion Visitor's Center.
Dave was chosen to dress up as a Battalion member during the tour.
In the Battalion Courtyard the girls learned about old fashion washing, brick making, and panning for gold.
Then we headed to TGIFridays for dinner. Back at camp we played games around the campfire (Matthew, Mark, Luke & Freeze) before heading to bed.
We took a bunch of pics after breakfast. This was my fav of Lex & Taylor.
Each tribe had a different color shirt and they took a tribe pic. The priesthood got photo bombed by Sis Witt.
For our hike, we walked down the beach for about an hour
and took a bunch of pics on this rocky overlook.
After the hike, the girls hurried through certification and lunch so they could have plenty of beach time. Kim & I made our 2nd annual french toast leftover dessert. We heated them up with freezer jam (thanks mom!), chocolate chips and marshmallows melted on top.
On the beach, the girls body surfed, worked on their tans (everyone got burnt), and I read my book.
Wednesday night would have been skit night, but we decided to have a lip sync battle instead. Each tribe randomly selected a song and had to preform. The Priesthood got "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner. Dave was the star.
Thursday - For the last full day at camp, Kim & I had designed Survivor inspired games so the girls could show off their certification skills. We divided the girls up so that there were different aged girls making up each team. We had games about cloud formations, using a compass, wildlife, making fires, and first aid charades. We had gotten beach toys as prizes for everyone, but the winners got first pick.
The girls spent the rest of the day down at the beach. There were signs warning the girls to shuffle their feet in the water to scare away stingrays, but Lex and Heather were still stung. They had to be carried back to camp by our firemen and treated by putting their feet in hot water for about an hour to get the poison out.
They got blessing and even though their feet were numb the rest of the day, they were fine.
Lex even went back to the beach, but mostly slept off the shock on a towel.
Each night we had tribal council, where the girls would vote for someone in their tribe who had been a great camper that day, and they got to wear a floral wreath. On the last night, The YCL's knowing my annoyance of your mom jokes, all wrote "your mom" on their voting papers. It was pretty funny. We started to pack and the girls read the letters from their parents, followed by testimony meeting.
Friday - The last morning Kim & I woke up with fat lips from our sunburns.
We finished packing up camp.
And headed back home. The girls & I mostly slept.
We were happy to get home and cleaned up. After a nap, Dave & I went out to dinner to celebrate our 16th anniversary. We were so tired we just went home and went to bed after dinner.
