Sedona Camping Trip

Saturday, May 23, 2015

The Shafers organized another camping trip with some of the families in our Ward.  We drove down to Flagstaff and rolled into town just in time to grab some lunch and watch Zach play.  He was in Flagstaff for a tournament.

We drove about 20 miles south of Flagstaff to our campsite. We got things all set up and just hung around our camp.  The Goons, the Osburns, the Shafers, the Stanleys, the Zezulkas (and their cousins) were all there. We had our dinners and just hung out around our campfire that night. Taz and Lex kept trying to get a kids fire set up so all the little ones would stop trying to sing and tell scary stories.

Sunday, May 24, 2015

We went on a hike Sunday morning. We had to park across the street to avoid paying a fee and we tried to hike to a better place to cross the road.  We ended up just making a run for it.

As we hiked, there were cool rock formations across the valley.

The plan was to hike to the river but we saw some signs to to go a bridge and we did that instead.

We hiked back to the road and ran across again. It was kinda freaky with car coming around the bend.

Lex and Taz opted out of the group hike and went on a hike of their own.

After lunch we went back the the river and this time hiked down to it.  The water was pretty cold.

Lex and Taz climbed up to the highest cliff jumping point. They got Seth to jump too, but from a lower spot.

Lex and Seth then went on to the higher jump! They tried to get Cam to jump too.  It took a lot of cajoling form Heather but she finally jumped!

We got back to the camp and survived a downpour while we made dinner.  Our dutch oven chicken was cook perfectly until the liner caught on fire and burned it!  We just ate around the burnt part. We hosted a group campfire again that night and tried to get kids fire started again. It worked a little better this time. The youngest kids went to the fire at the Zezulka's camp.

Monday, May 25, 2015

The next morning we took down the camp. Lex was "working hard" when she found this little guy.

Kim really wanted to go to the Javelina Cantina and see the javelinas that roam in the wild near the restaurant.  We got there too early to eat and did not see any actual javelinas, but we checked out the artsy stores in the shopping center and took some cute pictures.

We stopped in Flagstaff for lunch at a yummy BBQ place while some heavy hail came down then headed home.  We had a great trip until the last 5 minutes, when everyone began to argue. The rest of the weekend was such a good time with good friends.

Concerts for Camryn

Cam kept us pretty busy in May.

Monday, May 11, 2015

I had Camryn's piano recital in my calendar on the 18th. Jolynn came over for dinner on the 11th.  As we sat down to eat, I got a call from Sister Goon, her piano teacher.  We were late for the recital.  We hurried down to the church.  Camryn played "Falling Slowly" and "Music of the Night".  She did awesome.

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

The next week she had her choir concert. They sang "Dream Keeper",  "My Boyfriend's Back", and "Manvu".

Wednesday, May 27, 2015

We were invited back to the school the next week for the 6th and 7th grade awards ceremony. Cam got an Academic Excellence Award for Choir.  She had also recently tried out to be in Madrigals for the next year.  One of Alexis' friends helped with the scoring and told us that Camryn had gotten the highest score of all the 6th graders.

We had to duck out of the awards ceremony a little early to make it to the 2nd night of Camryn's dance recital.

She danced to ""We Got the Beat" and "Rollin' Over the Beat".

Cam is a good dancer and always knows her routine.

Field Trip

Monday, May 11, 2015

The students who had met all 5 of their Accelerated Reader goals got to go on a field trip. It took a lot of paperwork to organize all the students from different classes. We got on the bus around 9:00 and got to the Springs Preserve about 20 minutes too early. We started playing book charades to pass the time.  The Maxwell boys were cute, trying to help each other.

We split up in groups and I took Seth, the 4th grader, and the 5th graders. They liked the flood room.

I was glad that Seth had gotten his reading done, so we could spend the day together.

We checked out all the animals and insects outside.

We pretended to ride a train,

and meet new friends.

We played with this water feature in the museum lobby before heading over to the gift shop and nature exchange.

We also went to the Recycling Center.

We finished off our fun day with pizza back at the school.  I wasn't sure about it being worth all the paperwork to do a field trip, but it was!

May Madness

May is one of our busiest months of the year.  Here are just a few things that we were up to.

Friday, May 1, 2015

Hummel ES has dress up days about once a month. May was Crazy Hat Day.  We forgot and found these things in my office.  I love that Seth will wear super silly things without being embarrassed.

Saturday, May 2, 2015

Lex went to see Avengers with her friends, but we took the Littles.

Saturday, May 9. 2015

The boys went on the Father and Son camp out and took the Peery boys who were in town. April and I went to get ice cream and catch up that night. The next morning we had a Ward breakfast for all the women of the ward.

Later that night, when the boys had gotten back, we had the Peerys over for dinner.  It was so good to see them again. Even after a year, Mason is still Seth's best friend.

Sunday, May 10, 2015

I had a great Mother's Day. I got breakfast in bed and Seth organized a salad bar for dinner.  Dave got me fancy new stainless steel pans and a rack for them. They look great, but we are still trying to get used to cooking with them.

Monday, May 11. 2015

Seth's teacher recommended that he be tested for GATE. He got a 98% on the spatial portion of the test and got in.  He only went a few times the year but he really enjoyed it.

Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Lex went to Walmart with me and found this new lunch box - purple and an elephant!

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

This spring I held Storytelling Club every Monday after school.  The girls each chose a story and prepared to retell it at an assembly.

The two stories that scored the highest at our school assembly, went on to preform at the  District Bristlecone Storytelling Festival at the Windmill Library.

The girls all did a great job and are looking forward to participating again next year.

Wednesdays

Every Wednesday Ms. Bagheri's Kindergarten class has library right after lunch. Payton likes to boss everyone (in this pic she is yelling at another student who was going to chose the book she wanted) and started to give me pointers on how to improve my appearance.  She suggested earrings, curling my hair, and eye makeup.

One Wednesday I put a little more effort into getting ready in the morning.  I even re-pierced my closed earring hole.  Payton said I looked almost perfect - I still needed high heels and lipstick.  That is where I draw the line.

Friday, May 15, 2015

Alexis' friend Robbie plays lacrosse for the Coronado team.  They had an undefeated season and went on to play in the State Cup Finals.  Robbie had come to one of Seth's baseball games, so Seth wanted to go to Robbie's game.  IT WAS FREEZING! We had on winter coats and got wrapped up in blankets. They played Palo Verde, whom they had previously beat, but they lost.  They rallied at the end, but it was too late. Lacrosse is exciting but confusing to watch.

Monday, May 18, 2015

When Pitch Perfect came out on video, Ryan had the family over to have a Pitch Slap party, so when the sequel came out we wanted to see it together.  It was not quite as good as the 1st one, but was still pretty funny.

Friday, May 29, 2015

Hummel had Career Week at the end of May.  On Thursday, Chris came to talk to the students about being a photographer. Seth said it was the best presentation he went to. On Friday, we had a dress up day.  I dressed up as a cake decorator and Seth dressed up as a baseball player.
