Thursday in SF

Thursday, March 28, 2013

We woke up on Thursday and went to get crepes to make up for the one we had to throw up for being drench in alcohol.

Then we went down to the ferry to go over to Sasalito.  We walked around and looked in the shops and ate hamburgers grilled on a revolving wheel in the window.

We took the bus back to San Francisco, so we could go over the Golden Gate Bridge.

For our last stop on our trip, we took the trolley to the top of Lombard Street.  It was very high and curvy.  It was fun to watch the cars go down.

We ended up at the airport a little early, so we ate there.  That was fine by me - one last chance to eat some Boudin Sourdough Bread!  It was nice to spend the week alone, but I was ready to get back to the kids.  They all came with Donna to the airport to get us.  Either they missed us or really wanted their gifts.

Wednesday morning we got up to go to the de Young Museum.  We took the bus, like we did to go just about everywhere.  We had gotten week long passes that covered all bus and trolley rides.

We stopped at a bakery on the way and I got this lemon tart.  It was seriously the best pastry I've ever eaten. I dream about it.

The Museum was in the Golden Gate Park.  I wanted to see the Dutch exhibit, featuring The Girl with a Pearl Earring.  Of course, you had to pay extra for the special exhibit and for the audio tour.  The exhibit was several rooms of Dutch prints from etchings and then just a few paintings.  It was a little disappointing.

Several buses later, we ended up at the Palace of Fine Arts.  It was a bit drizzly, but well worth the trip.  The structure and park were beautiful. I thought Mr. Darcy might pop out from behind a pillar and tell me how ardently he admires and loves me.

We headed back to the hotel and changed before going to eat the best dinner of my life.  We went to The Crustacean and had Roasted Crab with Garlic Noodles.  It was truly amazing.  A couple behind us spent the whole time arguing about him going to clubs with other chicks.  They ended the argument by agreeing to go home, watch a movie, and smoke a little weed. Then the husband next to us ordered for his wife and told her to go wash her hands.  I was feeling a lot better about my relationship by the time we left the restaurant.

Dave had also gotten tickets to see Jersey Boys, I don't think he knew this plays in Vegas all the time.  Although there was authentic Jersey language in the show (code for swearing), the play was funny and the music was great. It was a wonderful early anniversary date and made me grateful for our 15 years of marriage.

Tuesday in SF

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

On Tuesday, we got up to take the ferry over to Alcatraz.  We stood in line behind some teenage boys from Germany.  I was curious why they would go there and asked them if they knew who Al Capone was.  They did and I made a comment about how I did know any bad guys from Germany - oh, except Hitler!  Talk about putting your foot in your mouth! It was pretty cold on the water getting over to the island.

When you get over to the island you get headphones to take an audio tour. I was hoping to get Vikki the Park Ranger as a tour guide, telling me stories about poking peoples eyes out and pissing in their ocular cavities! The tour was actually quite good and I was especially interested because I ad just read Al Capone Does My Shirts, about the children of the guards that lived on the island.

After taking the ferry back, we decided to check out the Aquarium on the Wharf.

It was a lot like The Shark Reef here in Vegas, except that The Shark Reef is WAY better.

We didn't stay too long at the Aquarium.  We were getting hungry so we decided to go to a pizza place Ryan recommended.  On the way there I wanted to go see the sea lions on the wharf and Dave did not, so he took off.  The sea lions weren't that great and I caught up to Dave heading back from the pizza place that was closed.  We found a little chowder hut to eat lunch at and I had an amazing crab salad sandwich on Boudin sour doughbread. We walked around the wharf some more and the crepes smelled delicious so Dave went to order one.  He chose one with some sauce that he did not know what it was - it turned out to be full of alcohol, so we just dumped it.  We were having a rough go of it!

Finally we decided to catch a bus over to Coit Tower.  We went up and took pictures walked around a bit.  The murals reminded me of the ones on Parks and Rec, but less graphic!

We were pooped, so we stopped by a red box, grabbed a pizza and spent the night in with a movie.

Monday in SF

Monday, March 25, 2013

Dave and I decided to celebrate our 15th Anniversary a little early by spending a few days in San Fransico.  Donna came to our house to stay with the kids and we took an early flight out of Vegas.  We took a train into the city, bought a MUNI pass to ride the busses and trolleys, then started walking to the hotel.  We walked a long way - in the wrong direction!   We finally got directions and made it to the Hotel Vertigo, based on the Hitchcock movie.  The movie played in the lobby 24 hours a day. Neither of us has seen it but it is on our list.  The hotel was very retro.

After dropping off our things, we took the trolley down near the Wharf and had breakfast at the Hollywood Cafe.  I had yummy Eggs Benedict.

After we ate, we walked around the wharf area and tried to adjust to the much colder weather.

Dave had booked a Segway tour for us to take, I called it a DORK tour, but Dave was pretty excited about it.  It took quite a while to watch the safety video and learn the basics of operating them.  The tour finally got going and the took us around the warf area, pointing out landmarks and places to eat.

We made a stop at this park and Dave and I went into this Cathedral.  The woodwork and stained glass windows were beautiful.

The tour took longer than expected so when we got back to the hotel, it was time to head to the basketball game Dave had gotten tickets for.  My foot had been bothering me and I was wearing my boot from when I had broken it, so walking was very difficult and I was so tired. We had to take the train and more walking was involved  The Lakers (including Kobe Bryant) were playing the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers were having a terrible game and it was not very exciting until the last quater.  The Lakers had a come back, but it was too little too late.  After the game we headed back to the hotel and passed out.
